EVERYDAY STYLES

Simple and easy to do, tie styles for everyday wear and informal settings.

The simple knot

The most common type of knot – inspired by mariner traditions, the simple knot works with all types of tie sizes and collar designs thanks to its small, adjustable design. A great basic, experiment with different thicknesses and fabrics like a knitted twill or textured wool.

How to tie it?

1. 1. Bring the thick end horizontally across the front of the narrow end
2. Pass the thick end behind the knot
3. Pass the thick end across the front of the knot
4. Pull the thick end through the horizontal loop and pull down to adjust!

The double knot

A variant on the simple knot, add a second rotation for a thicker, more pronounced look. Suited to straight, thin tie types, wear with a shirt that has a longer cutaway collar as seen in Italian and French tailoring, loosening the knot for added volume.

How to tie it?

1. Bring the thick end horizontally across the front of the narrow end
2. Pass the thick end behind the knot twice
3. Pass the thick end across the front of the knot
4. Pull the thick end through the horizontal loop and pull down to adjust!

SPECIAL OCCASION STYLES

More complicated styles for formal occasions. Worn with certain types of shirts for moments to remember like weddings or black tie events.

The Windsor knot

An elegant style characterised by its large knot. The Windsor is best suited to straight, thin ties in lightweight fabrics like silk or seersucker – worn with Eton or wingtip collar types.

How to tie it?

1. Cross the wide end in front of the thin end, looping around horizontally
2. Take the wide end over, through the opening and pull tight
3. Wrap it over the knot, bringing the wide end from behind the loop and over
4. Pull the wide end through the knot and adjust to fit!

The Christensen knot

A sophisticated style that adds volume to any type of tie, it’s best to opt for a thin fabric like wool or silk for a neat finish. Best suited to English and French tailoring, including spread and point collar shirts.

How to tie it?

1. Wrap the thick end in full rotation around the thin end
2. Flip the thick end up in front of the loop around the collar
3. Wrap it twice around the knot
4. Tuck the thick end into the knot and pull down to adjust!
