The South of France has long been a summer Shangri-La for artists, designers and fashion eponyms – an industrial hub and a crucial silk road for international commerce. We left Paris’s city limits for a pilgrimage down to Marseille where we met Michaël Azoulay, founder of American Vintage to chat about his Provencal second home and his favourite places to visit along the Mediterranean coastline.
Where’s your favourite place in the city?
My office! It’s got everything to make you feel at home. Beautifully nestled in the countryside only 40km from Marseille, it’s got an in-built gym, a sauna, a hammam and a terraced dining room – making it a really great place to work.

Where do you go to relax?
La Zia Concetta in Marseille. There’s nothing better than enjoying a real espresso on the terrace that overlooks the Mediterranean…and trying authentic produce from the Italian store its twinned with.

Running in parc Pastré.

Les voutes Virgo , a cultural space with lots of temporary exhibits, great atmosphere and DJ sets.
