Barbour is a timeless brand, very popular today, but the story began a long time ago. It was in 1894 in South Shields Market Square that the brand was founded. Today, the company is run by the 5th family generation and Barbour's head office is located in Simonside, South Shields. The brand known for its coats and jackets is now present in over 55 countries worldwide. In 1894, founder John Barbour opened J Barbour & Sons at 5 Market Place, South Shields. In 1912, Jack and Malcolm Barbour became joint managing directors of the company, and in 1927 Jack Barbour resigned and Malcolm was appointed chairman. In 1928, Duncan Barbour joined the company. A motorcycle enthusiast, in 1936 he created a range of motorcycles that quickly took off with bikers, and the biker style also became very fashionable. Barbour suits were worn by all British international teams from 1936 until 1977, when the brand withdrew from the motorcycle market. In 1957, Barbour became a manufacturer-distributor, and in the same year Malcolm, Nancy and son John Barbour took over the business. In 1968, following John Barbour's death, his wife Margaret was appointed to the Board of Directors. In 1980, the first lightweight, hard-wearing short riding jacket was created. Successively in 1982 and 1987, Barbour received the second and third Royal Warrant from the Queen and then the Prince of Wales. In 2007, at the Galstonbury Festival, Barbour jackets were worn by numerous artists and celebrities. In 2013, the brand became official sponsor of the Newcastle Falcons rugby team. In 2015, the brand presented itself for the first time at London Fashion Week Men's. Barbour is still a leader in men's fashion, and can be worn on all occasions for a sober, elegant and all-round look.
Being above all a family affair, Barbour remains true to its core values, bringing to its garments and especially its men's coats the unique values of the British countryside with a touch of glamour, courage and quality of spirit. As a result, our sleeveless down jackets, jackets and winter coats are designed to be functional, waterproof with their water-repellent fabric, and weather- and cold-resistant with their warm, windproof materials. Overall, the jackets are warmer, more waterproof and suitable for all outdoor situations than a trench coat, blazer or denim jacket, for example, and are designed for comfort and freedom of movement. The brand is proud of its craftsmanship and quality materials, and strives daily to produce durable outerwear that can be passed down from generation to generation. Barbour is also committed to sustainability, working to minimize its environmental impact. With its origins, Barbour's jackets are inspired by Anglo-Saxon aesthetics, with check or tartan patterns on the inside, hunting, biker or military jackets, for example. So go for a Barbour jacket that suits your personality and can be worn for every occasion. Barbour offers a complete lifestyle wardrobe.
The various Barbour collections are aimed at men, women, children and even dogs, but Barbour's flagship product is of course the waxed canvas jacket. Waxed canvas is part of the brand's DNA, and was an avant-garde method in the late 19th century. Originally, they used cotton canvas, which was waterproof but sacrificed the comfort and breathability of waterproof jackets. John Barbour decided to rely more on waxed canvas, a waterproofing technique that was still little-known at the time, allowing the material to breathe. Barbour's most iconic models, introduced under Margaret Barbour, are undoubtedly the Beaufort and Bedale. All are made from waterproof waxed canvas, with the famous velvet stand-up collar for a cool two-material look, lined pockets and zip fastening with signature buttoning. The Beaufort men's jacket is available as a short, straight-cut jacket in khaki green, dark blue or navy blue. The lining of this handsome zipped jacket features a tartan pattern. You can wear this pretty waterproof windbreaker jacket with a dressy look for an elegant silhouette, or with city sneakers, a hoodie and raw or slim jeans for a more urban, casual look. The Beaufort jacket is a timeless model that spans generations. The handsome Bedale men's jacket, meanwhile, offers a more casual look, opting for a slightly oversized look that will perfectly complement the Beaufort jacket in your wardrobe. We offer this model in khaki and navy blue. This straight-cut jacket is perfect as a mid-season jacket for men, but also as a winter jacket with a sweater underneath. The zipper and button details make the jacket elegant. Other models in other styles are also available, such as a hooded parka jacket in a mid-length style, or the Hawthorn jacket with removable hood and brown leather details. The Quilted Lutz model is a handsome quilted men's jacket with a slim fit for elegant style.
The brand is particularly famous for its waxed jackets. Made from cotton or waxed canvas, they are designed to withstand the elements and offer optimum protection. To guarantee this quality, Barbour uses carefully selected materials. From short coats and long jackets to quilted jackets, hooded jackets, overcoats and men's bomber jackets, each product is created with care and expertise to highlight the company's values.
