Discover Caussün ECO X CEPTION brand offering soft woolen slippers, perfect for staying warm in winter. The brand pays particular attention to the materials used to achieve entirely eco-designed slippers.
The founders of Caussün, Mélanie and Philippe Aguad, father and daughter, had been offering biosourced slippers for hotels since 2009. They then decided to expand this offer to the general public during the Covid period. We were able to chat with Melanie who presented the philosophy of the brand.
"Caussün" means slipper in Provencal, this word is the origin of the brand. Caussün is committed to being totally transparent in its approach and offers a slipper with natural or recycled materials, which is a nice alternative to synthetic products: the Caussün slippers are partly recyclable and compostable.
The brand uses wool from Ardèche, coming from a Scop that has developed a method to recycle the short fibers of wool. Indeed, during the shearing process, it is the long fiber that is used for the textile industry. The Scop recovers these otherwise unusable short fibers and Caussün turns them into wool felt, guaranteeing warm and comfortable slippers. The brand does not use dyes, so there are three unique colors for the slippers: the beige, which comes from white sheep, the chocolate, which comes from black sheep, and the ashy, which is the result of a mixture of the two wools.
This wool is recovered directly from the sheep, but it can be considered recycled wool since it is originally intended to be thrown away and is given a new life.
In order to ensure extreme comfort in the slipper, Caussün recovers the foam scrap from a mattress manufacturer in Portugal. For its lining, Caussün uses organic cotton from Panama, and its outsole is made of PET from recycled plastic. This puts Caussün slippers at the forefront of eco-design!"
For the founders of the brand, it was important to "stay close to home" regarding its raw materials and particularly for its wool. It wishes to highlight the French wool industry by working hand in hand with a Scop from Ardèche. In addition, most of the raw materials come from Europe: Portugal for the cork and foam, Italy for the PET sole.
Caussün is keen to maintain local manufacturing: its workshops are located in northern Portugal, in the region of Porto. The team often goes there to be able to exchange with the workshop manager and the seamstresses.
Finally, always in a logic of eco-design, Caussün slippers are made to be composted and recycled once they reach the end of their life. The wool parts, upper, and insole are potential compost clients, after being separated from the PET outsole.
The PET foam and sole are recyclable and the cork and wool fur can go into textile sorting bins. And if one feels like it, one can also use the stem and sole to protect plants from freezing in winter!
