In 1830, John Rich, an English immigrant settled in Pennsylvania, built a woolen mill for dressing lumberjacks working in the region. A few years later, to cope with the influx of workers employed in the construction of railway lines that crisscross the United States, John Rich built one second mill, which is still part of the buildings constituting the headquarters Woolrich, Pennsylvania.
